TIFF is a not-for-profit cultural organization with a mission to transform the way people see the world through film. TIFF is dedicated to presenting the best of international and Canadian cinema and creating transformational experiences for film lovers and creators of all ages and backgrounds. As Canada's premiere home of cinema, TIFF offers screenings, lectures, discussions, festivals, workshops, events, professional development and opportunities to meet, hear and learn from filmmakers from Canada and around the world. We are committed to treating all individuals with respect, dignity and fairness by removing physical, social and economic barriers to participation. We ensure that all who wish to enjoy TIFF's programming can do so.
“Our Mission,” TIFF, accessed April 14, 2024, https://www.tiff.net/mission.TIFF began in 1976 as the Festival of Festivals. Festival founders Bill Marshall, Dusty Cohl and Henk Van Der Kolk decided to bring the best films from other festivals around the world to Toronto. After they found that other festivals treated guests coldly, they strove to attract major Hollywood productions by emphasizing hospitality. They hoped that such an initiative would bolster Canada’s fledgling film industry, and stimulate creative and commercial interests. The festival was renamed the Toronto International Film Festival in 1994. Also that year, its year-round programs became housed under the umbrella of the Toronto International Film Festival Group. The organization as a whole was officially rebranded as TIFF in 2009.
