Biography

L Morgan Lee is an award-winning actress, director, and (sometimes) writer. She made history, becoming the first openly transgender performer to receive a Tony Award® nomination for her standout debut in the Pulitzer Prize and Best Musical winning show, A Strange Loop on Broadway. The performance also garnered her an Obie Award as well as, Drama League Distinguished Performance Award and Lucille Lortel Award nominations. In London, L Morgan has been seen in the center of a number of workshops and projects in development, including portraying artist Lili Elbe in an adaptation of David Ebershoff’s novel,The Danish Girl. She can be heard on the Grammy Award® nominated Broadway Cast Recording of A Strange Loop, The Rainbow Lullaby Album (Broadway Records), Joe Iconis’ album (Ghostlight Records), purring out “Sugar Fly Soul” as Ornate Williams in the Sugar Maple audio series (Osiris Media) and more. In 2021, the visionary received The Mark O’Donnell Prize for emerging theatre artists. Coaching and educating young artists since 2003, L Morgan is committed to how we prepare the next generation - and more specifically, how we create spaces that allow students to not only hone their craft but to feel affirmed and encouraged in the process. In addition to being an Adjunct Professor in the University setting, she has been a regular faculty member with a variety of Intensives in New York City where she does masterclasses that focus on “Acting Through Song” and “Bringing Your Individual Spark to the Work.” L Morgan serves on the Advisory Board of the Breaking the Binary Theatre Company where she has directed a variety of programming including: an industry presentation of Shualee Cook’s play, Cercle Hermaphroditos and Overheard: A Commissioned Collection of Monologues by TNB2S+ Artists - that was recently published and made available by Broadway Licensing. As a writer, L Morgan’s recent work can be found in BLISS: A Collection and in Playwrights Horizons’, Almanac, vol.3. She is a recipient of The Mark O’Donnell Prize for emerging theatre artists and earlier this year, the Human Rights Campaign honored her with a 2024 HRC Visibility Award.
