Biography

Independent filmmaker Morgan B. Powell is a New York-born and based writer, director, producer, and photographer who centers marginalized narratives in their practice. She has directed and produced music videos for Yaya Bey, NAIMA, and Ivy Sole and docu-series for Freeform, VICE, Google, and more. Morgan writes and directs stories of Afro-futures, solutions to present injustices, and visual prose in response to lessons of the past. His work is grounded in his experience as an abolitionist organizer and ethnographer, with the purpose of creating critically conscious art. They center the narratives of marginalized people, using storytelling as their liberation toolkit’s sharpest weapon. Morgan employs a Black queer feminist lens to explore healing, childhood, spirituality, justice, Black folklore, and all the nuances of the human condition.

They received their B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Spelman College and are currently pursuing an M.A. in Digital Cinema Production at The New School. Morgan writes and directs stories of Afro-futures, solutions to present injustices, and visual prose in response to lessons of the past. Their work is grounded in their experience as an abolitionist organizer and ethnographer, with the purpose of creating critically conscious art. They center the narratives of marginalized people, using storytelling as a tool for liberation. Morgan employs a Black queer feminist lens to explore healing, childhood, spirituality, justice, Black folklore, and all the nuances of the human condition. ​As of 2021, Morgan has directed two music videos for Ninja Tune signed artist, Yaya Bey, and is developing a short film inspired by the artist's forthcoming album. Morgan is the recipient of the 2021 Stowe Story Labs Diverse Voices Fellowship to attend the Stowe Narrative Lab where they will further develop their original children's animated feature, "Cassie's Sankofa".
