Larry Tung

Larry Tung is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist in New York City. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts at York College/CUNY and teaches courses in speech communication and communications technology. Prior to York, he taught media courses at Kean University in New Jersey for 11 years.

A native of Taiwan, he holds an M.F.A. in TV Production from Brooklyn College and an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University. He received several fellowships, including Vanderbilt University Media Fellowship, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Faculty Fellowship.

Tung’s films focus on social justice and human rights issues. They have been featured in more than 70 film festivals around the world. His debut film, Daughters from China, won the best documentary award in the 2005 Honolulu International Festival, and his 2009 film, Welcome to My Queer Bookstore, was a finalist in the short documentary category in the CMJ Film Festival in New York. His 2013 film, From Leonard to Leona, premiered at Gender Reel Film Festival and was screened in Mexico, Romania, United States and Indonesia. His 2017 film, Children of Drum, premiered at the African Diaspora International Film Festival in November 2017 and screened at RapidLion-The South African International Film Festival in March 2018. His most recent film, Bigger Is Better, premiered at Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival in September 2021, and screened in the U.S., Canada, China, Korea, India and Italy.
