Rick Castro

Rick Castro is an independent filmmaker, photographer and curator living in Los Angeles his entire life.

His work has been published in artist editions, exhibitions and institutions worldwide. Castro's works are in the permanent collections of The Alfred Kinsey Institute and The Tom Of Finland Foundation.

His photography has been featured in Art in America, Flaunt, Attitude UK, DNA and Tetu magazines.

He was the west coast editor for Studio Magazines, (Blue, Black & White) Australia from 2001- 2007.
Castro has photographed for designer Rick Owens's fashion shows during 2006- 2007. Owens presented Castro's photography in Paris for the Tranoi Homme in Paris, 2007.

In March, 2010, Castro was featured in the NYC exhibition called- REVEALED: the tradition of male homoerotic art. Rick’s photography was presented along side Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Paul Cadmus, Jean Couteau and Herb Ritts. Prior to that he created two books of his photography. Castro, (1991) and 13 Years of Bondage, (2004).

Castro co-wrote and co-directed the iconic film Hustler White staring Tony Ward. Premiering at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, Hustler White receiving both high praises and scorn from industry critics. After the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang declared Hustler White a work of art, the film had theatrical screenings worldwide and is now considered a cult classic. The film is now archived at the UCLA Legacy Project and was listed in the top 100 independent films of the 20th century by film critic Manohla Dargis for the Los Angeles Times.

Castro also directed the infamous documentary called Plushies & Furries for MTV in 2001. This work scored number 2 in the ratings and helped to introduce a new culture. He has also directed & wrote Three Faces Of Women (1993), Fertile La Toyah Jackson Video Magazine Parts 1 & 2,(1992), 45 Minutes Of Bondage (1994), and Another 45 Minutes Of Bondage (1997).

Rick has lectured about his work at NYU, UCLA, UCSB, Track 16 Gallery, Bergamont Station, and 18th Street Arts Complex. On November 11th, 2005, Rick founded ANTEBELLUM gallery in Hollywood. He lives and works in Hollywood, California where he runs ANTEBELLUM, the only fetish art gallery in America, and perhaps the world.
