VALENTIJN (pronounced “Valen – teen”) follows the film’s namesake for nearly a decade
and shows her process of self-discovery from age 8 to her late teens. Valentijn’s
parents talk about how they managed to balance social expectations and pressure with
support for their child, while candid opinions from classmates though the years reveal
the challenges—and voices of acceptance—that can be present in a young transgendered
person’s life. Meanwhile, Valentijn, facing rules on everything from appropriate clothes
to wear to what roles can be danced in ballet class, bravely shares her story of being
true to herself.
