Image of the Mosaic DVD case in front of a white background. The cover features a collage of images from the film, including a drawing of a goat, a New York city skyline with some Times Square billboards emphasized and a superimposed drawing of a needle, a drawing of the Statue of Liberty with a curly mustache, and a baby blue unicorn-and-rainbow sticker. The overall feeling is of a travel scrapbook.
"Mosaic" follows Markus Harwood-Jones, a homeless queer and trans youth, couch-surfing across Toronto, Montreal, New York City, Philadelphia, Orlando, Tampa, Houston, Redlands, Oakland, and San Francisco throughout the summer of 2012. Along the way, Markus connects with nearly 50 different trans, Two-Spirit, and/or non-binary individuals, asking them to share their insights on the topics of gender, community, and survival. What makes Mosaic unique is not only the content of the film, but its production process. Markus and co-creator Shane Forrest worked with an exclusively trans, Two-Spirit, and/or non-binary team (including all editors, transcriptionists, and even musicians featured in the soundtrack) to make "Mosaic" a documentary by and for each other. This work is more than a film: it is a practice in making, and living, in community. Mosaic was released on DVD was released August 28, 2014. A reduced length version was released on YouTube on August 28, 2018. The re-release of Mosaic included the launch of the Mosaic Scholarship for Two Spirit, Trans, and/or Non-Binary new-media artists; in October 2018, The Mosaic Documentary Project awarded 8 individuals a total of $1500 to support their upcoming projects.
