Performance has always been at the heart of queer identity; from butch and femme,
to drag balls, to avant garde performance art, being queer in the world has always,
out of necessity, come along with knowing when to pass, when to act up, and when to
be outrageous.
This year’s Festival celebrates just a few of our queer performance traditions, and
dreams up a few more. John Cameron Mitchell, director, writer and performer extraordinaire
of the now-classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will be here. Femmes and those who love
them will rock your socks (and so much more) with a night of performance and burlesque
at Femme Fabulous, while the gals of Freeshow Seymour (Toronto) will act out with
their Dirty Dyke DIY party. Show and Tell examines the rich and varied history of
performance in Vancouver with classic and contemporary works by
queer video artists.
And last but not least: keep an eye out for Off Screen and Unexpected, a series of
totally unique performances that will infuse your movie-going experience with that
little sense of performative je ne sais quoi
“19th Vancouver Queer Film & Video Festival.” Out on Screen & Vancity, 2007.
