    Tricia’s Wedding

    film/video, 1971

Anticipating the present-day practice of up-to-the-minute political satire as seen on SNL, The Daily Show, and Last Week Tonight, the world-famous Cockettes — including disco superstar Sylvester — orchestrated a decidedly queer, hysterically funny send-up of the televised wedding of First Daughter Tricia Nixon on June 11, 1971. Come revel in psychedelic debauchery as you've never seen it before with a new pristine 4K remaster of Tricia’s Wedding. Restoration commissioned by Frameline and the OutFest UCLA Legacy Project and facilitated by the UCLA Film & Television Archive for the 50th anniversary of this queer cinema landmark.

Long before the settlers arrived to Turtle Island (aka North America), there existed a Two Spirit Society in many tribal communities. The Two Spirited people were revered and treated with respect and equality. They were sought for their wisdom, healing and visions. Once a child had reached the age of puberty, a special ceremony was held. The child would enter a lodge, and pick either a basket or a bow. The item chosen helped to provide guidance on whether the feminine or masculine role would be the path followed. The Two Spirit Society was quickly abolished with the arrival of settlers. The Two Spirit Society has been revived… Niish Manidoowag speaks to the real issues that transgender youth encounter in their life’s journey. We honour all LGBQT peoples everywhere. Directed by Debbie Mishibinijima, an Odawa/Potawatomi woman from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (Manitoulin Island, Ontario). The name of this film is in Anishinaabemowin, translated to English, it means Two-Spirited Beings.

    Leitis in Waiting

    film/video, 2018

LEITIS IN WAITING is the story of Joey Mataele and the Tonga leitis, an intrepid group of native transgender women fighting a rising tide of religious fundamentalism and intolerance in their South Pacific Kingdom. The film follows Joey, a devout Catholic of noble descent, as she organizes an exuberant beauty pageant presided over by a princess, provides shelter and training for a young contestant rejected by her family, and spars with American-financed evangelicals threatening to resurrect colonial-era laws that would criminalize the leitis' lives. With unexpected humor and extraordinary access to the Kingdom's royals and religious leaders, Joey's emotional journey reveals what it means to be different in a society ruled by tradition, and what it takes to be accepted without forsaking who you are.
