The TML is in Solidarity with Wet’suwet’en Land Defenders

A person with dark hair and a black sweater raises their fist in the air. The text over top of the image reads: "Legal defense fund: FREE THEM ALL #AllOutForWedzinkwa."

The Transgender Media Lab condemns the RCMP’s brutal militarized attacks against Wet’suwet’en land defenders who are protecting sacred headwaters from TC Energy’s illegal efforts to run a pipeline through the unceded territory of Wet’suwet’en. We deplore the Canadian government’s actions to undermine and delegitimize the rightful authority that the Hereditary Chiefs of Wet’suwet’en hold over their traditional territory. These ongoing attacks are a direct result of the Canadian government’s colonial project of cultural genocide against Indigenous peoples.

We also denounce the unlawful arrest of two trans women of colour, who were held on the men's side of the prison despite their wishes. This institutionalized form of transphobia is intertwined with colonization and the efforts to delegitimize BIPOC trans people’s sense of self.

We are in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders and their supporters who are protecting their right to sovereignty. We urge you to listen to the voices of those on the front lines by visiting the links below, and to share these resources with your networks. If you are able to do so, please consider donating to the Legal Defense Fund (linked to below) to help support land defenders and supporters who are wrongfully arrested by the RCMP.
